Several months ago, I was in a doctor'ss office.  After handing me the prescription, the doctor asked where I would like the prescription filled.  I was at a loss because I had no idea which of the local pharmacies had the best price on the prescription.  After some consideration, I decided on the pharmacy across the street solely for convenience sake.  Had I know at that time that simply driving less than a quarter mile to another pharmacy, I could have saved significantly; I would have done it in a heart beat.  However, at the time, there were no tools that I knew of to help me find this information.

Pharmacy Discounts - Three Numbers You Need to Know

Nearly every pharmacy has discount arrangements for prescription drugs. You never need to pay full retail price even if you have no health insurance or prescription drug coverage.

That’s why LowestMed offers everyone a free discount card valid at over 58,000 pharmacies nationwide. But what happens if you don’t have your discount card on you when you need to pick up a prescription? That was the case with one of our fans last month. A mother of a 1 year old baby hurried off to the doctor and was prescribed an anti-biotic. Immediately after, she headed toward her local Wal-Mart Pharmacy to pick it up but she had forgotten her LowestMed discount card. Luckily, she contacted LowestMed and we were able to text her three important numbers that she gave to the pharmacy resulting in a significant discount on her medication.

Here are the three numbers that anyone can use to get a discount at your local pharmacy.

      1.       BIN # 011867

      2.       Group # HTA04

      3.       ID # Your initials and last 4 digits of your phone #.

The pharmacist will know what these numbers mean so just store them in your phone or address book and use them whenever you need to.

Of course we always suggest printing your discount card from www.LowestMed.com but if you forget it, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Just use the three numbers stated above.

PS: Spread the word to everyone so they can save money too!

Why Compare Prices if You Have Health Insurance?

Most people don’t do comparison shopping for prescription drugs. One reason is that the majority of us have health insurance that pays a portion of the bill. However, the fact that is sometimes overlooked is that most insurance plans require the patient to pay a copayment – that is, money out of your own pocket. Usually copayments are nominal but they can range for $15 - $65 on many plans.

There are hundreds of drugs with retail prices below typical copayment amounts. If you are fortunate, the pharmacy will charge you the lesser amount. But why take a chance? If you know the price ahead of time, you can make sure you get the lesser of the copayment or the pharmacies’ lower retail price. Several consumers have told of their experience in discovering that the retail price of their drug was less than they had been paying for their copayment. Don’t be one of them. Go informed.

What’s more, many plans require you to meet a deductible before any insurance is paid. Deductibles typically range from $500 - $5,000. This means that you may have to pay the full cost of a prescription before insurance kicks in if you have not yet met your deductible.

If you are paying the full price of a drug because you haven’t yet met your deducible, the pharmacy should charge you the price that the insurance company has negotiated for your insurance. Again, it pays to be informed so that you do not pay more than you should. Compare prices. The same drug is not always the same price from one pharmacy to the next.

In either scenario, it pays to know the costs of your medications before you go to the pharmacy. To find the best prices for prescription drugs at pharmacies near you, always check

Savings of Nearly $1500 per Year

      Business Inspiration from the Founder

When my wife was diagnosed with elevated cholesterol, her doctor prescribed Zocor to get it under control. The doctor’s office staff asked the usual question, “Where would you like us to call in the prescription?” Not knowing how much it would cost, she told them that she didn’t know and took the written prescription home and started researching how much this new medication was going to cost. Being a member of a high deductible health plan with a health savings account (HSA) feature, she was motivated to spend the HSA money wisely. After all, this was money out of her own pocket.

She quickly found out that there was a great variance in prices from one pharmacy to another for the exact same drug. Her first call put the price of a 30 day supply at $203.50. After the initial shock, she was relieved to find out that there is a generic alternative to Zocor that is much less expensive. Simvastatin, the generic equivalent was quoted at $128.00 at her local grocery store pharmacy. That still sounded like a lot of money so she called other pharmacies. Rite Aid had it for $89.99, better yet, Walgreens quoted $59.99. Encouraged by the potential savings, she called others. At Wal-Mart she could get her prescription for $24.36 and finally at Kmart she found that she could get her drug for a mere $5.00 per month! By doing a little research, she saved nearly $1,500 per year on this prescription alone!

Now, instead of paying high prices blindly, anyone can shop for savings like these by using LowestMed.com. At LowestMed, we research the prices on prescription drugs to make it easy for you to compare and find the best prices on your drugs. Before buying your next prescription, check our database to see what prices are available at convenient pharmacies near you. You could save thousands of dollars. And in this economy, every dollar counts!
